mPOD

Magnetic Parachute Opening Device

Innovation

What is mPOD?

mPOD stands for Magnetic Parachute Opening Device — a revolutionary concept for a Parachute Opening Device where the parachute bag is closed using magnets instead of closing loops or elastic bands.

This project describes a POD with the innovative concept of closing the parachute bag using magnets instead of closing loops as in the Lazy Bag concept, or instead of elastic bands as in the traditional concept.

Advantages

Why mPOD?

Comparison vs. Lazy Bag and traditional elastic concept

No closing loops or elastic bands
No closing loops or elastic bands needed to keep the bag closed.
No tuck tabs
No tuck tabs from stiffener plate (4 pieces) for the closing flap.
No stiffener plates
No stiffener plates required at the bottom of the bag.
No grommets
No grommets at the bottom for closing loops or elastic bands.
Easier packing
Stowing the folded parachute is easier.
Faster packing
Stowing the folded parachute is faster.
More consistent openings
More consistent and reliable opening sequence.
Less wear
Less mechanical wear due to the absence of moving closing parts.

Technical description

The innovation lies in the way the bag is kept closed. Instead of the traditional mechanical locking via closing loops or elastic bands, mPOD uses magnets. This eliminates a range of fastening elements that are normally essential in a classic POD or Lazy Bag.

The design was developed and patented by Pgasus. The mPOD is suitable for use in certified parachute systems and complies with all safety standards.
